Amid ongoing controversy regarding comments made by Ranveer Allahbadia, YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani has approached the Supreme Court to either quash or transfer an FIR filed in Guwahati. It is related to allegations of promoting obscenity during an online show. This follows the Gauhati High Court’s directive for Chanchlani to present himself before the investigating officer within 10 days.

Ashish Chanchlani moves to Supreme Court amid IGL controversy

According to the news agency PTI, Chanchlani is listed as one of the individuals implicated in the case filed in Assam. Ranveer is the primary accused due to his contentious remarks on the YouTube show India’s Got Latent. The plea is scheduled for a hearing on Friday before a Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh.

In the petition, Chanchlani’s lawyers – Shubham Kulshreshtha and Manju Jaitley – have sought either cancellation of the FIR or transfer of the same from Assam to Mumbai. They cite that it was first registered in the latter. The lawyers have argued that their client did not say anything on the show and the obscene joke allegations were levelled against other people.

The report indicates that Ashish is seeking to quash the FIR registered at the Cyber Police Station within the Guwahati Crime Branch. In his petition, he requests the court to quash the FIR bearing No. 03 of 2025. It has been registered at Cyber PS Police Commissionerate, Guwahati Crime Branch, Assam, as it was filed later. Alternatively, the YouTuber has requested that the FIR be transferred to the Mumbai Police Station Nodal Cyber, as an earlier FIR, No. 05 of 2025. It was initially registered there.

Guahati High Court grants interim bail to Ashish Chanchlani

On Tuesday, the Gauhati High Court granted Ashish interim bail while considering his plea for anticipatory bail. They have instructed him to report to the investigating officer within 10 days. His legal representatives argued that he did not make any statements during the show and that the allegations pertained solely to his co-accused.

The FIR was lodged by the Guwahati Police on February 10. It followed a complaint from an individual, and it encompasses several sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), the Information Technology Act, the Cinematograph Act, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. On February 18, the Supreme Court provided interim protection from arrest to Ranveer. They deemed his comments on the YouTube show vulgar. Justice Kant reflected a dirty mind that brings shame to society.
